Abstract

Parametric modelling is unavoidable in contemporary design approach. Better information flow and data management can prove to be time saving in more complex projects. However there exist a very wide field of different approaches and tools that enable parametric/variational modelling and full parameterization is almost impossible for even slightly more complex models. Therefore a lot of crucial decisions about proper parameter set and constraints definition depend on designer knowledge. Project type, architectural solutions, environmental variables, stage of design, time limit and many others factors may determine modelling approach. From the examples shown in this paper we can reach conclusion that parametric modelling term can be used to describe very different techniques and there are still great gaps to be bridged in the data flow and management. Still 2D geometrical modelling or drafting is an indispensable element of designing but only as a support tool. To create efficient parametric model, designer has to determine crucial parameters and be aware of model elements dependency much more than in traditional direct approach. Proper constraints definition requires a lot of knowledge not only in the field of project industry but also in the area of theory of modelling, informatics and software architecture. Parametric modelling requires much more input and focus from the designer than direct modelling. Taking into account that creating parametric model (which is more complex and therefore more expensive) in the building industry must be justified by certain gains in the means of time and costs saving. By showing how powerful parametric tool may be, we have proved that its employment in civil engineering is highly recommended.
